‘Peace by Peaceful Means’: Repurposing ‘Akiriket’ for Peacebuilding in Pastoral Karamoja of Uganda

Project Summary
Bendicto Kabiito's research, titled ‘Peace by Peaceful Means’: Repurposing ‘Akiriket’ for Peacebuilding in Pastoral Karamoja of Uganda’, sets to investigate the nature of peace and pro-peace tendencies tenable through Akiriket (in indigenous justice system structure/customary governance system), by determining how this customary mechanism can be repurposed for effective peacebuilding in a post-gun violence Karamoja, through a participatory approach, while discerning peace-building roles women and the youths can and should play in the customary governance-justice context of this mechanism. The study will be undertaken in a historically volatile sub-region, whose cultural resources are being re-sought to address peace building challenges from within.
